Modifiers in SchemeServe are used to dynamically adjust premium calculations based on predefined criteria. They allow you to apply increases or decreases to a base premium depending on risk factors, underwriting rules, or commercial strategy.

Modifiers are a core component of rating logic and are typically applied after the base premium has been calculated.

Where are they built?

The fields are built in the question set editor, rating logic applied in the rating file and results output on the matrix tab.

You will find modifier fields in each risk group in your question set editor:

When you build in rating logic, you'll then see the results on your matrix tab in each policy:

Let's break it down further:

When it comes to the “Type” field, we normally input the type as “load” - this mean that in your rating file you can use a minus to specific if it is a discount and keep the number as a normal value if it is a load e.g.
“-5” = 5% discount  &"5" = 5% load.

Modifiers in MultiPage schemes:

Modifiers work in a similar way for MultiPage schemes, with one key difference in how they are applied.

You will find them within your MultiPage question in the Question Set Editor:

  • Navigate to your MultiPage question
  • Open Multiquestion on the left
  • Select the Modifiers tab (third tab at the top)

Key Difference

When a modifier is configured within a MultiPage question, it is applied per item (e.g. per policy) rather than at policy level.

For example:

  • In a property scheme, the modifier will apply to each property individually
  • This means the adjustment is calculated per risk entry, not once across the whole policy

This is particularly useful where each item (e.g. property, vehicle, location) has its own rating characteristics and requires separate premium adjustments.
